When we are at the coast we will be staying at a tourist hotel. When we head inland we may be staying in a varied standards of accommodation. In terms of facilities you may have shared bathrooms and toilets. If you are lucky to have your own it will be basic, toilet, shower. There is a possibility that we may camp in a tent or a hammock.
The Gambia’s currency is the Dalasi, with £1 Sterling buying around 65 Dalasi in June 2022 in exchange bureaus, in hotels rates vary. As with all currencies, the Dalasi rate to the Pound can fluctuate. Dalasi is available in the UK but you will get a better exchange rate in The Gambia. Currency can easily be obtained at most hotels, banks or bureaux de change and there are a few ATM’s where cash can be obtained from a VISA card. The largest note that is available is the 100D and the smallest is 5D.
The Gambia is located midway between the Tropic of Cancer and the Equator. The Gambia enjoys virtually uninterrupted sunshine and high daytime temperatures with almost no rainfall from November to June. On the coast, The Gambia experiences only small fluctuations in temperature from winter to summer; however from July to October the humidity level is high as the tropical sun is interrupted by short but spectacular showers. Although the months of heaviest rainfall are August and September, we have found that it has not detracted from our clients’ enjoyment of their holiday. It is an immigration requirement to have a Yellow Fever jab which can only be administered at travel health centers. Some other vaccinations will be purchased in bulk for the expedition, and will be administered by Dr. Adam Woodgate, Consultant in Emergency Medicine.
These may include Tetanus, Polio, Meningitis C, Typhoid, and Hep A / B. You will also need to take anti-malarial tablets, as The Gambia is a malaria region, which we plan to also purchase in bulk.
You should bring enough for the trip. As a general rule, the British Association of Dermatologists says you need at least six full teaspoons of cream to cover the body. 'This means for a week's holiday you should pack at least a 200ml bottle of suncream per person, says Dr Hextall.28 May 2018.
Generally, sunscreen should be reapplied every two hours, especially after swimming or sweating.
If you work indoors and sit away from windows, you may not need a second application. Be mindful of how often you step outside, though. Keep a spare bottle of sunscreen at your desk just to be safe. Even a short stroll at lunch could put your skin at risk.

The most common food is rice and chicken. Breakfast is quite often a nut porridge on our trip. The link at the bottom will give you an idea of food but we suggest you do some further research.
You are provided with bottle water throughout the trip and we manage dietary needs as best as we can. There are shops where you can get a few things. Soft drinks, crisps and we encourage participants to explore the market and street stalls. Mangos and bananas are great.

You should bring with you antibacterial hand wash and antibacterial gel which you should regularly. Banjul belly is a phrase that is used where get an upset stomach and this is often due to poor hand washing and sanitising. You will using their currency called dalsis and this full of bacteria. You should always clean you hands after handling money.
